We do, however, have evidence from the wider epic tradition to help us imagine how the epics came into being. Our imagination is aided by bards within the epics, including both heroes’ attempts to “compose” their own stories. These attempts make them strikingly similar to Gilgamesh. The key difference is that Gilgamesh writes his story down when it is over, while Achilles and Odysseus sing and speak theirs as they are still unfolding. Poet-singers, or bards, created and recreated epic stories to entertain audiences in wealthy households and at public ceremonies in Archaic Greece.

A virgin forest, however, lets in almost no light, and Humbaba’s purpose is to keep it that way, untouched and uncontrolled.
