This ebook is predicated largely on fieldwork that I performed in Brittany and Wales in 1983 and 1985. i'm grateful for a Fulbright Award for study in Western Europe and a school improvement Award from the collage of North Carolina that funded that fieldwork. lowe a much less tangible, yet no much less genuine, debt to Steve Anderson, G. M. Awbery, Steve Harlow and Jim McCloskey whose paintings at first sparked my curiosity, and led me to adopt this venture. i would like to thank Joe Emonds and Alec Marantz who learn parts of bankruptcy three and five. i'm relatively thankful even though to Kathleen Flanagan, Frank Heny and nameless referees who learn a dyslexic and schizophrenic manuscript, supplying me with criticisms that greater this ultimate model significantly. The Welsh nationalist neighborhood in Aberstwyth and its Breton coun terpart in Quimper helped make the time I spent in Wales and Brittany efficient. i'm indebted to Thomas Davies, Partick Favreau, Lukian Kergoat, Sue Rhys, John Williams and Beatrice between others for sharing their wisdom in their languages with me. Catrin Davies and Martial Menard have been specifically sufferer and worthy. with out their information this paintings might were infinitely poorer. i'm hopeful that this booklet might help stimulate extra curiosity within the Celtic languages and tradition, and support, even in a small means, these in Wales and Brittany who fight to maintain their language and tradition strong.

In Letter to a tender Farmer, his ultimate booklet of essays, Logsdon addresses the subsequent generation―young those who are relocating again to the land to take pleasure in a greater lifestyle as small-scale “garden farmers. ” It’s a way of life that isn’t outlined via gathering wealth or by means of the “get significant or get out” agribusiness approach. as an alternative, it’s person who acknowledges the great thing about nature, cherishes the land, respects our fellow creatures, and values rural traditions. It’s person who additionally seems to be ahead and embraces “right technologies,” together with new and leading edge methods of operating smarter, now not tougher, and keeping off untimely burnout. accomplished just a couple of weeks sooner than the author’s loss of life, Letter to a tender Farmer is a notable testomony to the existence and knowledge of 1 of the best rural philosophers and writers of our time. Gene’s earthy wit and occasionally irreverent humor combines along with his worthy views on many wide-ranging subjects―everything from tips on how to express a ram who’s boss to having fun with the virtually churchlike calmness of a well-built farm animals barn. examining this e-book is like sitting down at the porch with a neighbor who has realized the methods of farming via years of lengthy remark and perform. anyone, briefly, who has “seen all of it” and has a lot to assert, and masses to coach us, if we in simple terms take some time to hear and examine. And Gene Logsdon was once the simplest form of instructor: equivalent elements storyteller, idealist, and rabble-rouser. But in (20c) the pro again forces the appearance of overt agreement because it needs to be locally determined. (20) a. Me i a labour [eL breman. I PRT work-PRES now I work now. b. * Me i a labouran [eL breman. I PRT work-PRES-lSNG now c. Breman e labouran [eL now PRT work-PRES-lSNG 34 CHAPTER 2 A consideration ot two further phenomena leads us to sharpen our treatment of how proper government interacts with agreement and the Avoid Pronoun Principle in examples like (20). The first involves an asymmetry in the behavior of verbal agreement in affirmative and negative sentences.

B. Canai 'r beirdd. sing-COND the bards The bards would sing. However, the verb does exhibit agreement if there is no expressed subject. bob dydd. (30) a. Canwn sing-COND-ISNG every day I would sing every day. 38 CHAPTER 2 (30) b. Canai bob dydd. sing-COND-3SNG every day She would sing every day. c. Canent bob dydd. sing-COND-3PL every day They would sing every day. These facts closely resemble the behavior of agreement in Breton as well as that in Irish (see McCloskey and Hale 1984). However, Welsh differs from these other Celtic languages in that it permits verbal agreement to co-occur with expressed pronouns.

This criticism is not warranted, however, since our analysis makes the clear prediction that these affixed auxiliary pronouns should only be found where we are also able to find occurrences of pro. This is a non-trivial claim because pro is unable to occur in every NP position. Recall that pro must have its content locally determined by being governed by the synthetic agreement. This explains why in sentences (51)-(52) pro appears in the subject position but is unable to occupy the object position.
