Jasmin is the fiancée of our black hero, Captain Hiller. She has a young son from a former liaison and in order to support herself and her son she works as an ‘exotic’ dancer. Of course we all know that ‘exotic’ dancing is merely a euphemism for sex work. For feminists, both in the current wave of the feminist movement, beginning in the 1960s, and in the earlier wave which began in the 1860s, sex work has been a difficult issue.

Lost and bewildered, the unanchored masses thus seek out new ways in which to invest meaning into the purpose of life. Having abandoned God, science and enlightenment, we now look beyond the stars for truth. As each new generation comes of age there is, and perhaps always will be, a resurgence of interest in the paranormal, of which alien narratives offer the most irresistible hook. But at the present time there is much more than intergenerational angst at play. The millennium provided a focus for the alternatives to the triumph of the individual over society, the main characteristic of modernity.
